Language of Angels

During a "Directing: Process in Production" course at Muhlenberg College taught by Nigel Semaj, I was lucky enough to work on Language of Angels by Naomi Iizuka. This dramatic three-part play from 2000 follows the lives of nine friends who tragically lost their classmate, Celie, on a tragic night in a cave while in high-school, as they navigate life without her and the parts they each played in her death. Throughout the piece, each character has to face their past as Celie's memory does not just metaphorically haunt them but rather her voice is heard singing by both the audience and her closest friends and killer. During the class, I was tasked with directing both one monologue and one multi-character scene and asked to create textual analyses, character dossiers, and beat work, some of which is included below. Although the course did not allow for a full-length staging of the show to be performed, I would one day love to work on it and would suggest that video screens be mounted behind the actors, continuously playing what actually occurred for the audience to see as each character recounts what they remember about Celie's disappearance. Iizuka's piece utilizes flashback and the bending of time as a main instrument through which to tell her story and adding in media clips to represent "memories" in real-time might further help this beautiful yet heart-breaking story unfold.
