Merging Live Theatre and Virtual Reality to Create a New Socially-Aware Art Form

Since a very young age, I have loved to create. From owning my own jewelry business throughout elementary and middle school to forming a performance-based club in high school to working in my college’s costume shop, I’ve always enjoyed using both my hands and my head to invent and innovate. As a student of Entrepreneurship in the Arts, that desire to build has only become stronger, especially with the business venture assignment which tasked each pair of students with creating and then pitching their own unique artistic venture to the class. Over the course of the semester, I worked alongside my partner to develop VRtistry (pronounced vee-ar-tist-ree), a revolutionary way to combine virtual reality with live theatrical performance through a mental health show series. We researched existing immersive experiences and expert opinions on merging the worlds of theatre and technology further. We ultimately decided that if we were to do this through a mental health lens in which our audience would be able to experience a show about and alongside someone portraying a person with a specific psychiatric ailment we would not only entertain but educate as well. Attached are multiple components of the final project based on the data we collected and the ideas we have now fully thought out. While this company is fictitious at the moment, it is not outside the realm of possibilities that virtual reality theatre and this endeavor specifically might one day become a (virtual) reality.
